This directory contains SussexDataComm, which is a Java program used by students from data communication courses at the School of Engineering and IT to test their laboratory experiments. SussexDataComm has been designed to be used in conjunction with an FPGA-based board developed by the Author of SussexDataComm for the same laboratory courses.

SussexDataComm.zip (or download from UK) SussexDataComm v. 0.1  (java source code only).
commapi.zip (or download from UK) API from Sun for developing serial/parallel port applications in Java. This API has to be installed in the computer before using SussexDataComm.
CommAPI_FAQ.txt (or download from UK) The commapi API FAQ.
jdk1.2.html (or download from UK) Instructions on how to install and compile commapi when using JDK 1.2.

HOW TO INSTALL AND RUN IT

  1. Download SussexDataComm.zip and commapi.zip.
  2. Create an empty directory (java_source, for example), and unzip SussexDataComm.zip into it.
  3. Create another empty directory in the root directory, and unzip commapi.zip
  4. Install JDK. In case it is not already installed, the latest version of JDK can be downloaded for free from Sun's web-site (http://www.sun.com).
  5. Read the Instructions on How to Install commapi Under the JDK Environment.
  6. Go to the directory where the source code of SussexDataComm is, and compile the java files: javac *.java.
  7. Run SussexDataComm: java SussexDataComm.
